Newborn Baby Found Alive in Rubble in Syria

SYRIA: A newborn baby girl was rescued alive from under the rubble of a destroyed building in the Syrian city of Jinderis, while the baby's parents and entire family were tragically killed.

According to RTBF, the newborn is the only surviving member of her family. Doctors say the baby was born just seven hours after the quake, with her mother having given birth while trapped under the rubble.

Rescuers had to cut the umbilical cord between the baby and her mother, who was found dead, before then rushing the baby to the hospital.

On Monday, 6 February 2023, rescuers retrieved the bodies of the baby's parents, four siblings and aunt from under the rubble of a collapsed building.

The 7.8 magnitude quake has killed at least 8,400 people in Turkey and Syria, with 5,894 dead in Turkey and 2,470 dead in Syria, while hundreds of thousands more are stranded following the collapse of many buildings.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the death toll could rise to 20,000 and will likely affect 23 million people. The WHO promises to support the needs of both countries in the long run.
